What can you do? Here are a few suggestions for basic steps that you can take to reduce your emissions of carbon dioxide. Almost all of the suggestions will save you money as well!
Car
- Avoid driving when it comes to short journeys and trips that you make frequently, such as travelling to and from work – use public transport where possible, or why not walk or cycle?
- Travel together with your neighbours or colleagues, so that you can travel together and reduce the total number of cars being used
- In many countries you can choose a car powered with renewable fuels, such as ethanol, biogas or biodiesel
- Use an engine preheater at temperatures of below +10°C – a cold engine consumes much more fuel
Air travel
- Fly with airlines that fill up their planes and that use modern aircraft – new engines are much more fuel efficient
- Fly directly avoiding intermediate stops, as these significantly increase overall fuel consumption
- Do not fly as much!
At home
- Select electricity from renewable sources, e.g. wind power plants
- Review your heating system and improve the insulation in your house
- Switch off appliances when they are not in use; for example, do not leave your TV on standby
- When you replace appliances and bulbs, replace them with low-energy models
- Select food that is produced locally – in particular avoid food that has been transported by air
