A technology provider has been trying for some time to sell his energy efficiency improvement technology to an industrial enterprise in Malaysia. Due to the financial crisis the custumer has received budget cuts and stricter demands on internal investments and payback. Moreover, the technology has never been used before in this industry in Malaysia and the customer is therefore reluctant to take on additional technology risk.

Tricorona supports the technology provider by assessing whether the project has potential to generate carbon credits from the implementation of the technology. The basic information for the project includes the following:

• Energy saving equivalent to 1,152 TJ/year
• Burner efficiency is 70%
• Energy source is coal

Based on the above information and knowledge of the flexible mechanisms, Tricorona can estimate the emission reduction generated from applying the technology. In this case it is approximately 150,000 tCO₂ per year, which is equivalent to an equal number of carbon credits. The project therefore has the potential to obtain additional €900,000-1,500,000 per year from the generation of carbon credits.

The increased revenue stream shorten the payback time for the investment considerably which makes it easier for the technology provider to persuade the customer to purchase the technology.

Once Tricorona has signed a purchasing contract for the carbon credits with the customer, Tricorona can start to develop the CDM component and register the project at the UNFCCC.
