ABBREVIATIONS AND TERMS
ANNEX 1 COUNTRY
Those countries that have ratified the Kyoto Protocol and that have undertaken to reduce emissions by 5.2 percent compared with the 1990 level.
AAU Assigned Amount Unit. Name of the emissions credit that is allocated to countries with an emissions ceiling according to the Kyoto Protocol.
CDM Clean Development Mechanism. One of the flexible mechanisms according to the Kyoto Protocol. CDM projects are measures aimed at reducing greenhouse gases in countries without a commitment to reduce their emissions. The projects generate CER-type emissions credits.
CER
Certified Emission Reduction Unit. Emissions credits that are generated from CDM projects.
CO2
Carbon dioxide.
ERU
Emissions Reduction Unit. Emissions credits from JI projects. These emissions credits are made up of restamped AAUs.
EU
European Union.
EUAS
European Union Allowances. Emissions credits that are allocated to businesses and that are traded within the EU-ETS European trading system.
EU ETS
Emission Trading Scheme of the European Union. The European trading system for emissions credits.
GWP
Global Warming Potential. The climate impact of a greenhouse gas expressed in carbon dioxide equivalents.
IPCC
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. United Nations’ climate panel.
JI
Joint Implementation. One of the flexible mechanisms according to the Kyoto Protocol. JI projects are measures aimed at reducing greenhouse gases in countries with a commitment to reduce their emissions. The projects generate ERU-type emissions credits.
CARBON DIOXIDE EQUIVALENTS
The impact on the climate of greenhouse gases translated into the corresponding climate impact of carbon dioxide.
NAP
National Allocation Plan. Each country within the EU-ETS submits proposals to the European Commission regarding the number of EUAs to be distributed nationally. The Commission then decides on the actual allocation.
UNFCCC
United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. United Nations’ body for climate action.
