Tricorona cements position as leading Gold Standard carbon offset provider
Ningxia Yinyi windfarm in China registered as the largest Gold Standard CDM project to date
Tricorona announced today that its windfarm project Yinyi, in Ningxia, China, has been formally approved by the Gold Standard Foundation for registration as a Gold Standard carbon emissions reduction project. The project will generate approx. 100 000 MWh of carbon-free electricity and produce 98 000 tons of Gold Standard-certified carbon emissions reductions annually, making it the largest Gold Standard CDM project registered to date.
Gold Standard is globally recognised as the highest quality standard for carbon offset projects, and is backed by over 50 NGOs including WWF International. Gold Standard ensures that projects meet strict criteria for sustainability from an environmental and social perspective, and guarantees that issued carbon offsets are genuinely additional, independently audited and centrally registered.
“Tricorona’s business is creating high quality carbon reduction projects around the world, in particular, Gold Standard projects,” says Niels von Zweigbergk, CEO at Tricorona. “Yinyi’s registration as a Gold Standard project recognises this focus on quality and social and environmental integrity, and cements our position as a world leader in premium carbon offsetting.”
Yinyi has also been certified by the UN body CDM Executive Board, under the Kyoto Protocol, and is therefore approved for voluntary carbon offset purposes by public bodies such as the UK environmental ministry, DEFRA, and the Swedish Energy Agency, Energimyndigheten.
One customer for Tricorona’s Yinyi project is Volvo Cars, Sweden. “When we launched our new range of Flexifuel cars last year, we wanted to compensate the cars’ remaining emissions with high quality Gold Standard offsets, and we chose Tricorona to supply the projects,” says Anders Wahlén at Volvo. “We are pleased that the Gold Standard Foundation has confirmed the quality of Tricorona’s work in developing the Yinyi project.” Tricorona, headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, is a full-service carbon offset company offering carbon offset and climate impact management services to end-user customers around the globe. Offsetting is provided from Tricorona’s own portfolio of over 150 projects within renewable energy and energy efficiency, representing carbon savings of over 68 million tons.
