![]() ![]() 2009-01-29 Tricorona and Fortum launch carbon neutral district heatingTricorona, a world leader in carbon offsetting, has reached agreement with Fortum, a leading energy supplier in the Nordic region, under which Fortum is to offer its Swedish customers carbon neutral district heating, in the first service of its kind. The offsetting is provided by Tricorona’s UN-certified emissions reductions projects within renewable energy, and complies with carbon offsetting guidelines from the UK environmental ministry, DEFRA, and the Swedish Energy Agency. “Fortum’s district heating is already an excellent choice for the climate, with around 80% generated from renewable energy sources,” says Johan Tjernström, Fortum Värme, “and now we are taking the next step, by offering our customers the possibility to offset the remaining fossil emissions. This new service is an easy and cost-efficient way to achieve fully climate neutral heating, and because we are constantly improving our processes, the cost of offsetting the carbon emissions will reduce over time.” ”It is crucial for the climate to reduce carbon emissions,” says Per Egstam, head of offsetting at Tricorona. ”It is equally important to take responsibility for those emissions that remain, and we welcome Fortum Värme’s groundbreaking initiative to offer climate neutral heating.” The climate projects used in the offsetting are all certified by the UN under the Kyoto Protocol, and therefore comply with guidelines from DEFRA and the Swedish Energy Agency. Some of the projects are also certified by Gold Standard, an independent quality standard for offset projects.
