![]() ![]() 2009-11-10 UN confirms 2.3 million tons of carbon emission reductions from Tricorona’s climate projectsTricorona continues to invest in emission-reducing projects in developing countries, known as CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) projects, and has successfully registered 27 new projects with the UN so far this year. During this period, the UN also confirmed that Tricorona’s current projects have reduced global emissions by 2.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide. “We have become involved in a total of over 190 climate projects in developing countries. So far, these projects have reduced global greenhouse gas emissions by a total of 7.8 million tonnes, which is equivalent to more than 17 percent of Sweden’s annual emissions,” says Niels von Zweigbergk, CEO of Tricorona. Tricorona is currently involved in approximately 90 UN-registered CDM projects, while an equal number are being reviewed before they are submitted to the UN for registration. The CDM system is a part of the Kyoto Protocol and gives industrialized countries an effective means to complement efforts to reduce emissions on a national level. “A crucial question on the eve of this autumn’s climate negotiations is what the future of the CDM system will be when the Kyoto Protocol expires after 2012. With long-term rules in place, the system has enormous potential as a means to reduce global emissions of greenhouse gases cost-effectively,” says Niels von Zweigbergk. Most of Tricorona’s CDM projects involve construction of wind power and hydropower facilities and recovery of waste heat.
