![]() ![]() 2009-11-16 WWF India chooses Tricorona for Gold Standard CDM carbon offsettingTricorona and WWF India announced today that WWF India has chosen to offset the climate impact of its air travel with UN-approved, Gold Standard CDM offsets from Tricorona’s biomass project Sri Balaji, in Andhra Pradesh, India. Ravi Singh, Secretary General & CEO, WWF India said that “Offsetting WWF-India's air travel emissions through this Gold Standard CDM project from Tricorona is part of our commitment towards addressing our carbon footprint. We will continue to take measures to reduce this further through employing low carbon alternatives to air travel in future.” Sri Balaji uses agricultural waste, such as rice and cotton husks, to generate electricity in a modern biomass power station. By replacing coal-fired electricity, the project saves roughly 30 000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions a year, along with hundreds of tons of other pollutants. The project also generates local employment opportunities and has contributed to local health and education initiatives. “Tricorona stands firmly behind the global sustainability agenda represented by Gold Standard and promoted by WWF,” says Per Egstam, head of voluntary offsetting at Tricorona, “and we are pleased to be able to assist WWF India in offsetting their own operations.” Gold Standard (www.cdmgoldstandard.org) is a certification program for carbon offset projects backed by environmental organizations, including WWF International. It aims to identify the projects with the highest contribution to sustainable development, with a specific focus on social sustainability.
