![]() ![]() 2009-11-30 Tricorona calls on UN to continue encouraging wind power in ChinaTricoronas installed capacity of its wind power plants in China and India has now surpassed 1300 MW, which is more than the entire installed wind power capacity in Sweden. The plants in China are expected to reduce carbon emissions by 1,8 million tons during 2010, which is roughly equivalent to the annual emissions from the entire electricity generation sector in Sweden. The development in China is depending on its support from the UN, but new proposed rules may now jeopardise continued international investment in Chinese wind power. - Wind is a fantastic energy source, and our customers are keen to invest in wind power as a way of reducing their emissions, says Per Egstam, head of voluntary offsetting at Tricorona. By choosing to build wind plants in China, we achieve a positive impact for the climate that is more than seven times greater than building the same plant in the Nordic region. All of Tricorona’s financing of wind power projects has been made possible by the Clean Development Mechanism of the Kyoto Protocol, under which developed countries invest in emissions reductions projects in developing countries. - China had practically no wind power before the advent of the CDM system in 2005, says Susanne Häfeli-Hestvik, Tricorona’s Technical Director, but the last four years have seen the installation of almost 25 000 MW of wind turbines – and practically every wind project built in this period has been co-financed through the CDM system. China has already become the second largest generator of wind power in the world, after the USA, and is projected to take over first place during 2010. The UN is currently reviewing CDM rules, including a proposal which would eliminate the possibility for Chinese wind projects to be financed through CDM. - The rapid development of the Chinese wind power sector is a shining example of what CDM is all about: a huge increase in the production of renewable energy, where it has the biggest impact on the climate, says Niels von Zweigbergk, CEO at Tricorona. We call upon the Swedish climate delegation at Copenhagen to ensure that the framework remains in place for our continued investments in renewable energy. The scale of the CDM system achievements is often underestimated by observers: Tricorona’s investments alone, in renewable energy and energy efficiency projects, represent annual emission reductions of ca 10 million tons annually from 2012, which is more than half of the total emission reduction target that the Swedish state is committed to at a national level.
