TCO Development offsets carbon emissions via Tricorona
TCO Development, the company behind TCO Certified – the global eco- and quality label for IT products – is cooperating with Tricorona to offset the company’s travel-generated carbon emissions as part of their climate strategy.
Roughly half of the computer monitors manufactured in the world today carry the TCO label, indicating that they meet tough requirements for both user characteristics and minimal environmental and climate impact. Starting in 2009, companies that sell TCO-labelled products must also prove that they work actively with corporate social responsibility in the manufacturing process.
“TCO Development is associated in people’s minds with environmental and climate responsibility, so we naturally want the company’s other activities to reflect the fact that we practice what we preach and take the climate issue seriously. Reducing the company’s climate footprint is a constantly ongoing process,” says Sören Enholm, CEO of TCO Development, and adds:
“Since most of our customers and business partners are located in Asia, the USA and the EU, there is a great deal of air travel involved, even though we also hold many meetings via telephone and the Internet. Carbon offsetting our air travel is only one of the many steps we are taking to assume greater responsibility for the environment and the climate.”
TCO Development offset the emissions from all air travel by their employees during 2009. All in all, this air travel generated emissions of 102 tonnes of carbon dioxide. TCO Development’s carbon offsets come from the Zhangwu wind power project in China and the Sree Rayalseema biomass power plant in India. The projects are UN-certified under the Kyoto Protocol, guaranteeing that the projects yield great environmental benefits while contributing to sustainable development at the local level. The projects thereby also meet the Swedish Energy Agency’s requirements for carbon offsetting and undergo an annual audit to ensure that the emission reductions are achieved in practice.
“We are very happy with TCO Development’s climate commitment and look forward to our continued partnership,” says Per Egstam, President of Tricorona Climate Partner. “More and more companies choose to offset their travel emissions, often as a first step in establishing a strategy for climate responsibility.”
