Tricorona chosen as carbon offset supplier to Swedavia Swedish airports

Swedavia Swedish Airports, which runs Sweden’s state-owned airports, announced today that it has chosen Tricorona as supplier of Gold Standard CDM carbon offsetting for the next three years. The initiative is part of Swedavia’s comprehensive climate strategy which includes reducing and offsetting climate impact of the organisation’s operations.

“Swedavia has an ambitious climate program, and has reduced emissions from its operations significantly over the last few years through a range of efficiency measures,” says Per Egstam, CEO of Tricorona Climate Partner, “and we are pleased to have been chosen as supplier to offset the remaining carbon emissions, with our wind and biomass projects in India and China.”

Swedavia is a founder member of Airport Carbon Accreditation, an initiative under which many European airports have committed to monitor and reduce their carbon footprint, to engage stakeholders in climate issues and to offset the remaining emissions from their operations.

“Gold Standard CDM* represents the highest quality level available for offset projects,” says Lena Wennberg, environmental manager at Swedavia, “and Tricorona is one of the few companies worldwide whose projects meet its strict criteria for genuine carbon reductions and contribution to sustainable development.”

The offset projects chosen are Sri Balaji, a biomass power plant in India, and Yinyi and Yangjiayao, two wind farms in China. These projects save carbon emissions by displacing coal power, and have a wide range of side benefits such as reduced local air pollution and greater security of energy supply for rural communities.

The emissions to be offset arise from Swedavia’s energy use in buildings and fuel use in vehicles, at all 14 of its airports, as well as the organisation’s business travel.

The Clean Development Mechanism, CDM, is a framework laid out in the Kyoto Protocol for the development of carbon emissions reductions projects in developing countries. All projects are carefully reviewed and monitored by the UNFCCC to ascertain their emissions reductions.

Gold Standard is a quality label for emissions reductions projects that have additional side benefits. Gold Standard is backed by over 60 NGOs including WWF International and Greenpeace International.
