Tricorona to offset United Nations General Assembly Meeting
Tricorona is working with the United Nations Foundation to offset the climate impact of a meeting hosted by the President of the United Nations General Assembly on “Addressing Climate Change: The United Nations and the World at Work” at UN Headquarters in New York on February 11 and 12, 2008.
The offsets are to be provided from a biomass power generation project known as Sri Balaji in Andhra Pradesh, India, where agricultural waste is used to provide electricity, thus displacing coal-based power plants. The project is an operational CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) project, has been validated and verified under the Kyoto Protocol by Det Norske Veritas, and registered with the CDM Executive Board under the auspices of the UNFCCC. In addition, the project has applied for registration with the Gold Standard, an independent certification body in Switzerland founded by NGOs such as WWF International to identify and promote high quality carbon offset projects that address the roots of climate change and contribute to social sustainability.
“Tricorona is a recognized leader in the area of offsets from projects certified under the CDM. We’re pleased to be working with them to limit the environmental impact of this important dialogue,” said Ryan Hobert, Deputy Director for Climate Change at the United Nations Foundation.
“Our focus is on developing sustainable renewable energy projects in countries around the world,” says Niels von Zweigbergk, CEO at Tricorona, “and we are pleased and honoured that the UN Foundation recognises our success in this regard.”
