Joint Implementation (JI)

Joint Implementation (JI) is the third of the flexible mechanisms defined in the Kyoto Protocol.

JI allows countries with emission reductions targets under the Kyoto Protocol (Annex 1 countries) to implement emission reducing projects in other Annex 1 countries. These projects generate Emission Reduction Units (ERUs) that can be used for compliance with the emissions targets undertaken by the Annex 1 countries.

The emissions reductions achieved are measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalents (tCO2e), meaning that one ERU represents one tonne of non-emitted or reduced CO2e. A JI project must generated emissions reductions that can be proved to be additional to what would have occured in a business-as-usual scenario, i.e. without the added incentive of JI.
